Photo Essay: School on Wheels for
Malibu Times

School On Wheels is a program that provides after school programs specifically for the homeless children who live in the family shelters near San Pedro ST. & 7th Street in downtown LA.

Malibu retired schoolteacher, Agenes Stevens, founded the program in 1993. She began tutoring homeless children in the park in Santa Monica. Today, there is a building, employees & volunteers.

Our days began in the late afternoon where I would go with the school’s director to pick up the children at the shelter and walk several blocks to the school. During these walks we passed many homeless on the street, people living in boxes and tents. I realized how much these children see on a daily basis just living in downtown LA.
